Welcome to Aron’s Jewish Delicatessen an independent family run business and the only Jewish Deli in Bristol. Whether you’d like to eat in, take-out, order a platter for collection, buy some groceries or hire our premises for a private event, we look forward to serving you!
Inspired by the Jewish Delis of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, we serve modern Jewish soul food and dishes based on the traditional Ashkenazi cooking of Eastern Europe, all made from local ingredients.
Please check our facebook page and download a sample menu for more information, or call to place an order!
Please note our new opening hours!
We are on summer holiday between 13.06.16 and 26.06.16. We will be open again from 29.06.16.
Aron’s Delicatessen’s co-founders Marta Aron and Steve Varcoe originally met in Budapest before moving to Bristol in 2013. They missed home cooking and decided to open a restaurant serving Hungarian Jewish “comfort” food made with top quality ingredients from Bristol and the South West.
This approach to fusing the traditional food of Eastern Europe with local ingredients led them to the idea of creating a kind of New York Delicatessen serving Jewish Deli food. Deli food also originated in Eastern Europe but it became altered through exposure to new ingredients and ideas in places like London’s East End and New York.
At Aron's Delicatessen you’ll find ingredients like cheddar cheese and cider alongside traditional Jewish Deli food like salt beef on rye - blending tradition, modernity and quality.
We make as much of our own food on the premises as possible. For example we cure our own fish to create pickled herring and lox. We brine our own brisket to make succulent salt beef sandwiches. Pickles are made in house using local cider vinegar. Beigels are sourced from a specialist bakery and are augmented by rye bread, bialys, challah and pletzel baked on the premises. We also bake all of our own cakes.
We serve many traditional Jewish Deli favourites including: beigels with smoked salmon and cream cheese, latkes with apple sauce, chopped liver with pletzel and of course chicken soup with matzo balls.
But there’s also some food on our menu that isn’t normally found in a traditional New York Deli. Some of our favourite dishes are unashamedly Hungarian like veal goulash and chicken “paprikas”. We also bake many Hungarian cakes including “flodni” - a rich Jewish layer cake made with walnuts, poppy seeds, apples and plum jam.
As well as tea and coffee, we serve fresh local apple juice and two classic Deli seltzers, Celery Soda and Egg Cream (which contains neither eggs nor cream). We stock a small selection of bottled and draught ciders from independent local producers and we also have an excellent "palinka style” plum eau-de-vie from Ludlow in Shropshire. You’ll also find Czech pilsener, English ale and Polish vodka.
